There are two options for this course: Stepping Stones or Coffee Table Dish
Introduction to Mosaics
Mosaic tiles come in so many varieties it’s like walking into a sweetie shop! You can also use your own mosaics made from shells or broken crockery – please bring these with you if you’d like to incorporate them into your design as I only supply commercial tiles. They come in – glass / ceramic / sparkly / plain / irridescent / square / oval etc etc. Choosing your tiles will take a little time so please come with a design in mind if you can. Pinterest and Google Images are good sources of inspiration.
Stepping Stone
You will make at least 2 x 20cm round, reinforced stepping stone for your garden.
Plan of the day:
- I will teach you how to cut your tiles to create different shapes opening up the design potential
- trace your design onto brown paper which lines the 20cm round plant tray former
- choose your tiles
- glue your tiles onto the design (upside down)
- make mortar to fill the tray (with my help)
- practice cleaning up a stone once it has set – see below
You will be able to take the stone home with you but it takes 7 days to set. You can put it anywhere at home as long as it is dry – it doesn’t have to be warm.
Coffee Table Dish
You will be decorating a 32cm bamboo former.
Plan of the day:
- I will teach you how to cut your tiles to create different shapes opening up the design potential
- I will provide a paper circle to plan your design on
- choose your tiles
- glue them in place using silicon glue
- practice making up and using grout (see below)
You can take the plate home with you but the glue will need at least 24 hours to dry before you grout the plate. I can supply grout if required.
